Visits
The Society organises several day visits during the year; some are linked to the lecture programme whilst others take the opportunity to go to a special exhibition or to a country house with an art collection.
We had a very successful series of visits during 2008. Members are now looking forward to visiting the ‘Breughel to Rubens’ exhibition at the Queen’s Gallery. This will follow a detailed introduction to this special event at the January lecture.
In May Winchester College and Winchester Cathedral will be the venues for what will be two special opportunities to be conducted round these important historic buildings by particularly knowledgeable guides.
The Chapel of Lancing College and Firle Place will be the destinations of a ‘coach outing’ in June.
Short Breaks
In most years we have a least one short break. During 2008 this was to Dublin, a city of immense charm and artistic treasures in a setting of Georgian architecture.

Study Days
Study days are arranged once or twice a year, giving the opportunity to examine a particular topic or theme in detail. Over the years many fields have been the subject of these days, the two most recent being the development of English leady crystal in the 18th and 19th centuries and in 2008, of particular interest to lovers of classical music, Three Symphonies – Mozart’s Symphony No 40 in G minor, Beethoven’s Symphony No 5 in C minor and Elgar’s Symphony No 1 in A flat.
In January 2009 there will be a study day to give an in-depth look at church textiles, vestments and linens, when the tutor will be June Martin, who has made a lifetime study of this specialist field and whose expertise has been much sought after within ecclesiastical circles.
